SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager)

How does that work?

Windows 7/Vista/XP platforms can use Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to manage change and configuration. The software allows organizations to push relevant operating systems, applications, and updates to Windows users quickly and cost-effectively.

Automatic tools like Windows Update are already used by many Windows users to keep their systems updated. The SCCM tool allows technicians to update all Windows 7/Vista/XP systems managed on the network.

It also improves the overall network security on campus by protecting each PC from software vulnerabilities.

SCCM Process: How does it work?

In most cases, SCCM processes are invisible to you. Computer updates are transferred to your computer in the background, at which time your computer's tasks will continue uninterrupted.

Your computer will be updated once you restart it. For this reason, among others, you should turn off your computer at the end of the day (or at least once). Whenever your computer restarts automatically, you will see a message in the lower right corner stating how long it takes.

Occasionally, an SCCM update can cause a system crash when a computer has been infected with spyware or other malicious software. In this case, you will see a "blue screen" or other sign of abnormal operation.
